Alternative Fuel (AF) Alternative fuel utilization in the cement industry started in the 1980s. Starting in calciner lines, up to almost 100 per cent alternative fu el firing at the precalciner stage was very quickly achieved. AF are mainly used tires, animal residues, sewage sludges (SS), and waste oil, as can be seen in Table II.
